Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU TO PERFORM THESE SERVICES?
The owner has 10+ years of experience in residential and commercial construction. We are licensed by the state of Maryland as a Home Improvement Contractor and are formally trained and certified in hardscape and drainage installation.
WE WANT TO INSTALL A NEW SHED/ACCESSORY STRUCTURE BUT THE AREA IS OVERGROWN AND ARE NOT SURE HOW TO GO ABOUT CLEANING UP THE AREA BEFORE BUILDING. IS THIS SOMETHING YOU CAN HELP WITH?
Yes, we can clear out the area and prepare the site for your new structure. We are happy to take on the full project, from permitting/zoning (if required) to final construction.
CAN YOU HELP WITH PERMITTING AND ZONING REQUIREMENTS?
Yes. We are happy to submit all permitting and zoning applications for your project.
WHAT TYPE OF DRAIN PIPE/SUPPLIES DO YOU USE?
We use NDS drain tile and fittings. These are purchased from Site One Landscape Supply. We use both corrugated pipe and smooth/pvc pipe in our drainage installations. Corrugated pipe installs faster and is less expensive than pvc pipe, however if we have concerns with roots or slope we will recommend pvc pipe to ensure the system works appropriately and lasts a long time.
WHAT TYPES OF HARDSCAPE MATERIALS DO YOU USE?
We have experience using Hanover, Cambridge, and Nicolock pavers and wall products. For structural retaining walls, we prefer to use Allan Block due to the product’s reputation and ease of installation. All of our hardscape projects are finished with polymeric sand or resin, depending on the application. We do not use stone dust or sand as a joint filler as it has proven to fail over time.
HOW DO YOU INSTALL A PAVER PATIO?
We start marking and excavating the site, a minimum of eight inches deep for a typical patio and 10 inches deep for a driveway. These depths can increase depending on soil conditions, all organic and soft material has to be removed for proper compaction. We then lay a light layer of gravel and compact the site and place a fabric to prevent weeds and absorption of sub base into the ground over time. Our sub base is several inches of clean ¾ inch stone (57 stone) that gets compacted and followed by a thin layer of 3/8 inch stone (#8) that pavers are laid on. We do not use crusher run and sand as sub base as was done in the past, these bases do not do well with water over time and are shown to fail. Pavers of the customers choice are then laid with polymeric sand or resin used to secure the joints. The edges of the pavers are locked in with concrete. From our research and installation experience, we have found this to be the best installation method for a hardscape project that will last a lifetime.
WHAT ARE PERMEABLE PAVERS/CONCRETE AND DO YOU INSTALL THEM?
Permeable patios and driveways allow water to pass though them freely. This can be achieved many ways but ultimately it is about creating gaps that allow water to pass through the surface. They are a great way to deal with storm water as well as prevent customers from zoning issues that arise from having too many impermeable surfaces. We have experience installing these types of hardscape projects.
CAN YOU PROVIDE US WITH A 3D DRAWING OF OUR PROJECT?
We can provide plans/drawings and 3D renderings of hardscape projects.
WILL YOU USE CUSTOMER SUPPLIED MATERIALS?
No, we will not. Having the contractor purchase materials ensures that we are responsible for purchasing enough quantities of the correct material. We are happy to allow for the customer to inspect materials before installation, however.
DO YOU WARRANTY YOUR WORK?
Yes. Our hardscape projects are warrantied for 10 years and drainage projects are warrantied for 5 years.
CAN WE START A NEW LAWN IN THE SUMMER/WINTER?
We only use cool season grasses for lawns, predominantly tall fescue, as these make for the best looking and healthiest lawns in our area. While cool season grasses are dormant during summer and winter, seed and straw can certainly be laid during these times. It will need to be kept moist, especially during the summer. The seed will remain dormant until it is ready to germinate (grow) in the fall/spring.
DO YOU OFFER MOWING SERVICE?
We do not offer mowing or maintenance services at this time, only new installation. We do offer tree and shrub trimming when we are onsite as a courtesy to our customers.
